About Michael

Michael Solis (pronounced SOH-lees) is the author of the Deficient series, young adult science fiction exploring power, identity, and belonging. The series includes Deficient, a BookLife Editor’s Pick and winner of a YADudeBooks Reviewers’ Choice Award, its sequel, Feral Rising, and two forthcoming novels.

Michael serves as Executive Director of Writers & Books, a literary arts nonprofit and independent bookstore in Rochester, New York, and serves on the board of the Publishing Triangle, which celebrates and supports LGBTQ+ literature. He is also an active member of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA), where he co-chairs the MG/YA Committee.

For nearly two decades, Michael worked in development and humanitarian action across Kenya, Sierra Leone, and Latin America. A graduate of Princeton University, he also holds master’s degrees in Human Rights Law and Gender Studies.

Drawing from his queer and mixed Latinx identity and global humanitarian work, Michael writes about people navigating worlds that weren’t built for them. Beyond the page, he enjoys teaching yoga and spending time in nature.
